It would be hard to review this film without giving anything away but here goes nothing. The film is not your average horror film, turning the very principles of horror cinema on its head to deliver something new, fresh, and awesome while delivering bold commentary on society and the state of the film industry. That is all I'm going to say without spoiling but I may have spoiled it without realizing.
The film is best enjoyed without knowing exactly what you're going to expect. I went in fresh and that made me enjoy the film all that more. The film begins with the simplicity of a slasher film but, like a carpet , the complexity begins to roll out as the film goes on.
I felt nervous watching this film, desperately hoping and wishing for the best for the characters, a rare feat accomplished by many filmmakers today. The last time I felt like this was when I was watching Ethan Hunt in the latest Mission: Impossible film. I walked out the film with a huge smile on my face, another rare feat accomplished by filmmakers. It was really worth the money for a ticket to see this film and it's worth the twenty bucks it's going to cost you when it releases later this year.
You are not going to see a better, intelligible film this month or even this summer, you can quote me on that, but I have been wrong many, many times before.
4 and a half out of 5.
A SPOILER-RIDDEN review coming in the next week.
